JAMES MACKLIN HATHCOCK2373

James Macklin Hathcock, born in 1822, was the son of Patrick Hathcock of Chatham County, North Carolina. He apparently married in his early twenty's to a woman whose first name was Louisa E., but whose maiden name is unknown. He and his brother Thomas Alfred Hathcock moved to Marshall County, Kentucky, in 1845. They lived in Marshall County until 1847 and. then moved to the adjacent county of Graves. For some reason unknown. neither he nor his family are found in the official census records of Kentucky from 1850 through 1880. Perhaps he is listed under a variant spelling. An affidavit found in the Graves County court records dated 14 April 1884, proves that he was living near Mayfield, Kentucky, on that date and had "lived there many years". However, research of other records has revealed that his family consisted of two sons and three daughters:

Fletcher Reid, born 19 March 1845, in Marshall County, died 8 February 1899.

Mary J., born 9 March 1848, in Graves County, and died 30 September 1868.

Alfred W., born 1855 in Graves County, and died at age 4, on 6 March 1861.

Amanda, born 1860, no further information.

The obituary of James Macklin Hathcock was published in the Hopkins Kentuckyian newspaper on Wednesday, July 6th 1898. This obituary indicates that he died 30 June 1899 at Symsonia, Graves County, Kentucky, and that he left an aged wife, a son and two daughters. The son, Fletcher Reid, married Mary Jane Edwards 28 December 1898, at Mayfield (Graves County Marriage Book 2, Page 348) and lived at Symsonia. One of the daughters was Mrs. Lee Kaler and the other daughter was Mrs. George Crowell. The older daughter, Mary J. and the younger son, Alfred W., had predeceased James Macklin. The obituary refers to him as Elder J. M. Hathcock. He is buried at the Clark's River Burying Ground.

There is no further information available on the children of James Macklin and Louisa E. Hathcock except on the family of Fletcher Reid and Mary Jane children were:

Rose Elizabeth, born 9 April 1876, in Graves County, married William Grabriel Pryor (b. 27 February 1875 or 1876 and died 1 October 1956, son of William Elbert Pryor and Nancy Ellen Puryear). Rose Elizabeth had a daughter named Rena May, born in December 1899, in Graves County who married a man named Golightly, and lived at 3410 Smith, Dearborn, Michigan. William Edward. born in January 1877, and died 9 April 1970, in Graves County. In the 1900 census of Graves County. William Edward was listed as age 21 and living in the household of his sister, Rose Elizabeth and her husband William Pryor. William Edward’s son was Raymond Hathcock of Marshall County, and his grandson is Boyce Dale Hathcock, who resided at 28400 Swan Island Drive, Grosse lIe, Michigan, 48138 in 1989.
