Notes for Thomas Alfred (Spouse 1)
Thomas Alfred Hathcock2431

Thomas Alfred Hathcock was born 16 May 1805 in the Haw River area near Bynam, North Carolina, son of Patrick and Rhoda Hathcock.

Patrick Hathcock was probably born in North Carolina in 1777 and there is evidence to suggest that he was the son of James Hathcock, a Revolutionary soldier of Chatham County, North Carolina, born 1742 and enlisted in Northampton County, North Carolina. The parentage of James Hathcock is unknown but it could be speculated on some reasonable basis, that he was the son of William Hathcock, Sr. of Northampton County and grandson of Joseph Hathcock of Old Brunswick County, Virginia now the southwestern part of Greensville County, Virginia.

According to the Last Will and Testament of Patrick Hathcock dated 16 June 1857 at page 460 of Will Book "C” in Chatham County, North Carolina, he had three sons: Thomas Alfred, Pleasant, and James Macklin to whom he left his property in equal parts. Thomas Alfred married Candiss Price in Chatham County and they had one son, William Jefferson born 19 March 1829 in Chatham County. In 1845 Thomas Alfred and James Macklin removed from Chatham County and settled in Marshall County, Kentucky where both lived from 1845 to 1847. In 1847 both brothers removed to nearby Graves County, Kentucky and remained until 1858 when Thomas Alfred removed to Anderson County, Texas, leaving his brother, James Macklin, behind in Graves County. No records have been found relating to James Macklin other than an affidavit signed by James M. Hathcock, brother of Alfred, dated 14 April 1884 in Mayfield, Kentucky. (It is interesting to note that a James Macklin married a Mary Heathcock in Wake County, North Carolina 5 October 1799.) While Thomas Alfred and James Macklin were in Kentucky their brother Pleasant remained in North Carolina.

Pleasant Hathcock, born 1813 son of Patrick, married a woman by the name of Susan, whose maiden name is unknown. Their children include Carny born 1837 (CSA), Kizzah born 1838, Caroline Frances born 1840, Laretta born 1842, Rhody born 1843, and Henry born 1846. (Chatham County Marriage Records indicate that Franklin Hathcock married Elizabeth Ryans 28 December 1857 and the martiage was witnessed by Carney Hathcock. Further that Rhoda Hathcock married Marion Richerson 25 January 1868.) In 1880 Pleasant is listed as age 70 on the census, his daughter Emiline age 38, his daughter-in-law Francis age 43, a grandson age 21, and two daughters-in-law Miley Addison age 26 and Sallie Bettie Addison age 9. All born in North Carolina. His son Henry married a woman named Martha and their children were John born 1872, Jeter born 1876, Lucy Ann born 1877 and Issabell born in 1880.

Returning to Pleasant's brothers in Kentucky, sometime between 1829 and 1852, Candiss, wife of Thomas Alfred died and he married Susan Moore Hollaway in Graves County, Kentucky 14 December 1852, the daughter of John Holloway and Susanna Fitzgerald of Calloway County, Kentucky. Susan was the widow of Henry Darnell and two of their children were Charlotte, who married Albert Thompson in Graves County in 1859, and Heywood Tarleton. It is said that Thomas Alfred became very ill in Graves County and Susan nursed him back to health before they were married. Their two children were James Patrick born 3 February 1853 and Lucien Anderson born 2 November 1855 in Graves County. Another unnamed child died in infancy.

On 19 November 1858, Thomas Alfred sold his land in Graves County and left for Texas "with two wagons and two teams on the land route and by public course." He and his wife first settled in Montalba, a small community near Palestine in Anderson County. Thomas Alfred acquired 1100 acres of land there but Susan soon died in 1865. She is probably buried in the Antioch Cemetery although no stone marks her grave.

Thomas Alfred Hathcock next married Mary Ann Smith Jackson 7 March 1866 in Anderson County, Texas. Mary Ann was born in Alabama 28 February 1840 and had a daughter Mary Carter Jackson born in 1861. The children of Thomas Alfred's third marriage were: Alfred Lawrence born 18 January 1867, Cora born in 1870 and Antoinette born 1871, all born in Anderson County, Texas. Dr. Alfred Lawrence Hathcock had a daughter Louise.*

Thomas Alfred Hathcock died 28 July 1883 at Montalba in Anderson County, Texas and is buried in the Antioch (Hathcock) Cemetery there. His wife, Mary Ann Smith Jackson, died 1 April 1929 and is buried in the Antioch Cemetery. Both were members of the Concord Baptist Church.

*Louise Hathcock wrote several books, one of which was Legends of East Texas, The Naylor Company, Publishers of the southwest, San Antonio, Texas (1957).
