Dorothy Carlton Bowren Hedin, 96 was born in Sterett, Texas on June 8, 1923 and passed away in her home in Sapulpa on Wednesday, December 4, 2019.
4965Dorothy was born at home on her parents farm in Sterett and was the fourth child of five children, born to Herbert and Ruby Butcher Carlton. She worked all her young life helping her family on the farm and also maintaining her school work. She attended elementary school in Sterret, then later attended and graduated high school in Waxahachie.
After high school, she worked in a garment factory where she met and later married her husband, Richard (Dick) Bowren. From this marriage, they had three children, son, Richard C. Bowren, son, Ronald M. Bowren, and daughter, Rhonda Jill Bowren Moback. Several years later her first marriage ended and she worked outside the home as a single mom for several years as church secretary at First Baptist Church, Sapulpa and later worked as a Dental Assistant to Doctor John Mose in Sapulpa.
In 1968 she married Rev. Alvin Hedin, immediately after he retired as pastor of First Baptist Church, Sapulpa. They were married for over thirty years and enjoyed a wonderful life together.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother and both her previous husbands.
She is survived by her remaining brother, Mark Carlton and his wife Patti, of Houston, Texas. Dorothy is also survived by her children, Rick Bowren and his wife Susan; Ronald Bowren and his wife Nancy; and Rhonda Moback and her husband Lee. Six grandchildren,Ten great grand children, 2 great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. While taking care of her husband, Alvin for several years, she was a founding member of the newly formed Faith Baptist Church in Sapulpa.
After Alvin passed away, she joined South Tulsa Baptist Church where she volunteered several hours a week in the Ministry Center. She worked as a counsellor interviewing clients coming in to receive clothing and food. She always managed to ask them about their religious faith and lovingly led them to make a personal profession of faith in Christ if they were interested in hearing. She made it her personal goal to witness to as many as possible who came to the center for help. Even at the age of 96 she still wanted to drive her car on nice weather days to attend Sunday school and church.
As a memorial to mom, we would like to suggest in lieu of flowers, that memorial donations be made in her name to the Ministry Center of South Tulsa Baptist Church. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 9, from 6-9 pm at Smith Funeral Home in Sapulpa. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:00 am at South Tulsa Baptist Church, 10310 Sheridan Road in Tulsa 74133. Services will conclude at the church on Tuesday. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at Red Oak Cemetery in Red Oak, Texas. She will be laid to rest with her parents and her brother and sister in their family plot.
