Imprisoned at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois, Sherwood died there of pneumonia and passed away on April 4, 1862. He is listed on the monument on the Confederate mound, mass burial site.
George was exchanged in Vicksburg and had a hero’s career fighting in the Confederate Army. Fought in many battles and made it from private to 3rd sergeant. Lucky to be alive he was discharged from the army on November 20, 1864 because of "his tender age of 17". He was actually 18 at this time. He had done his duty.
