HISTORY: Henry V 1413-1422.....The reign of Henry V began about seven years before James Gresham was born. Henry was 25 when he became King. There were plots against him but Henry was deep into war by 1415 when in October of that year he fought the Battle of Agincourt. Here the French lost many a mounted knight,around 6000. Henry lost about 800 foot soldiers. These sturdy yeomen were armed with the long bow amd woodem staves planted in the ground and pointing outward so to stab the horse upon which the knight would have been riding.
Henry VI 1422-1461.....In 1446 Henry VI was the only son of Henry V
Edward IV 1461-1470......Edward IV was of the House of York. He didn't have and easy time of it.
Henry VI 1470-1471......committed to the Tower of London where he died
Edward IV 1471-1483....Grandson of Richard, who was the son of Edmund fifth son of Edward III.
Richard III 1483 - 1485.....much maligned. Killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field.
LOCALE: The Manor House at Holt remainded in the familly until Sir John Greaham in 1555 founded the Gresham School by converting the Manor House which was located in the center of Holt. This then was the main residence of the family for over a hundrd years 1414 - 1555.
GAWYSI: Vol II No 3 July 1996 page 86 "James born ca 1420 - died ca 1497, sin of James Gresham of Holt was the first member of the family to achieve importance. In 1442, he became Lord of the Manor of East Besckham in Norfolk, but after the death of his father, he made his father's house in Holt his chief seat." James Gresham was a cousin and clerk to William Paston, [1378 - 1444]. One of the justices of the Common Pleas. known as 'the good judge',and to his son John Paston [1421 - 1466].
