Peter Sutton, born circa 1821, in Missouri, owned land just north of his brother Joseph, in Liberty Township, lron County, Mo. He married Martha Moss (Mose) August 10, 1843, in Madison County, Mo. [The marriage record says Patsy Mose" which was most likely a phonetic error in writing "Betsy Moss". The census records of 1850 and 1860, 1880 and the 1890 Civil War Census gives “Martha ". Only the 1870 census gives Betsy.]
Peter served as a Private in Co. D, 47th Missouri Cavalry, for 25 days, in 1862, according to his widow, Martha. She was living in Lesterville at the time of the 1860 Civil War Census. Peter had died from Malaria fever.
ln 1860 one Newton Moon, age 18, a teamster, was living with them and their five children. Martha was shown to be a chronically ill lady, suffering from rheumatism during most of the censuses.
Peter was a diversified man; the different census records showed him as collier, teamster, and shinglemaker, which was his occupation in 1880.
Peter is thought to have died about 1880 in Lesterville. Martha died after 1890. In 1880 Peter was living next to his daughter Susan.
