Howell Pinkney Joseph Hathcock
was born about 1827 at Pocahontas, Coffee Co TN. He was named in his father’s will written in 1840, Coffee County Will Bk. O., p. 84; Bk. 1, p.201; WPA. Howell P J, (under age) received 246 1/4 acres on Kirkland and Goose Pond branches of the Barren Fork of the Duck River.

Howell P J married Louisa Parker about 1846 in Cannon Co TN. They were living near Gilley Hill, Cannon Co TN when the 1850 census was taken and Goose Pond, Coffee Co TN when the 1860 census was taken. Louisa (Louvice) was born about 1828 in the Cherokee Nation, which included several counties in Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama. She was the daughter of Silas Parker and the sister to Samuel Parker.

At McMinnville, Tennessee November 28, 1862, Colonel Wright enlisted Howell P J in Company B, 16th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Howell P J’s regiment was sent to General Polk’s Corps at Murfreesboro, Tennessee where he fought in the Battle of Stone’s River, December 31, 1862 - January 3, 1863. On January 3, 1863, Bragg withdrew his forces from Murfreesboro and setup his Headquarters at Winchester, with Hardee at Tullahoma and Polk at Shelbyville. When Rosecrans made his move against Bragg June 24, 1863, Howell was taken prisoner at Shelbyville, TN on July 1, 1863. He was sent to Nashville and he was received at Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky July 15, 1863. Howell died with chronic diarrhea November 17, 1864 in a Civil War prison at Fort Delaware. He is buried at New Castle, on the Jersey Shore in the Confederate Cemetery on Pea Patch Island, Delaware. Louisa was a widow living in Coffee Co when the 1870 and 1880 census were taken. I have a picture of Uncle Miles and Aunt Jossie Hathcock family, three boys, Claude, Elmer, and Neely and four girls, Daisy, Ada, Mattie, and Willie, made at his home in Fairfield, Bedford Co TN. My father used to visit him at his home in Fairfield when my great grandmother, Sarah Anna Hathcock, lived with his family in the early 1900s. Louisa is probably buried at Gilley Hill, Co TN

Notes for Louisa “Suvice” (Spouse 1)
According to a descendant, John Lee Fults, GG grandson of Howell P. J. Hathcock and Louisa Parker, Louisa Parker was full-blooded Cherokee of the Echota Tribe:

My ancestor Howell P J Hathcock married Louisa Parker about 1846 in Cannon County, TN. She was full blood Cherokee Echota Tribe. The Cherokee Nation was composed of several counties of Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama. The capitol was at  Fort Payne, Dekalb County, Alabama. According to Louisa¹s descendant and author of Hoover’s Gap, the family came to Coffee (Warren) County in the 1820 and settled at Pocahontas, Gilley Hill, Goose Pond Communities. That was before they were rounded up and sent to Oklahoma. Howell P J was captured in July 1863 at Shelbyville, TN. He died in prison November 17, 1864 at Fort Delaware and is buried on Pea Patch Island, Delaware. His daughter, Sarah Hathcock is my great grandmother. She died in December 1933 and is buried in Fox/Fulks Cemetery near Hoover’s Gap.960
