Notes for Mary Hathcock
MARY HEATHCOCK (d. 1788)2423

Mary Heathcock was the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth of Greensville County, Virginia. She was probably born in the part of Brunswick County which was divided in 1781 to make up Greensville County. In 1787 another part of Brunswick County (the small root-like section of present day southwest Greensville County) was cut off and annexed to Greensville County. It is in this section of the county that Mary Heathcock was living when she died about 1788.

It is not known who she married and there appears to be no record of her marriage. Her children used the name of Heathcock, so she may have married a Heathcock man. The marriage records of the period show that a Joel Heathcock married a Nancy Heathcock in Greensville County 24 December 1795, indicating that Mary could have married a Heathcock man. They could have been distantly related for Heathcocks had been in America for over 150 years when she died.

Note added by Clayton Heathcock, December 2010. Y-chromosome DNA results for David Lee Heathcock, a direct descendant of Mary’s son Howell, strongly suggest that Howell’s father was a Moseley. There were a number of Moseley men living in Brunswick Co VA in the late 1700s.

The first record of Mary Heathcock appears in her father's Last Will and Testament dated in 1782 in Brunswick County. Joseph bequeathed Mary a third of some animals, plates and pots, to be divided with her brothers Charles and Jesse. Also, Joseph bequeathed one feather bed and furniture to his grandson, Howell Haithcock, devised one hundred acres of land to his grandson, David Haithcock, and thirty-five acres of land to his granddaughter, Elizabeth Haithcock. It is known from Mary's Will that Howell was her son, David and EIizabeth are thought to have also been children of Mary Heathcock.

The Last Will and Testament of Mary Heathcock was written in Brunswick County 18 July 1785 and probated in Greensville County 24 April 1788. This might be interpreted to mean that Mary lived to the west of her father and brothers, since they lived in Greensville County in 1783. The portion of Greensville County was annexed from Brunswick in 1787. Witnesses to the Will were Braxton Robinson and Littleberry Robinson. Both of these men witnessed many of the Heathcock documents appearing in the old deed and marriage records of this period. The Will bequeathed all of her belongings to her son Howell Heathcock and she named her brother John Heathcock, as Executor. No other children or persons are named in the Will (Will Book 1, Page 118).

Nothing more is known of Mary Heathcock except that soon after she died her son Howell married in Greensville County and had moved to Orange County, North Carolina, by 1800. He later moved to South Carolina and then to Middle Tennessee and settled in what is now Coffee County, where he died about 1848. There is good evidence that that Mary's other son David and her daughter Elizabeth also moved to Orange County and remained there.
