John Franklin Hathcock2418John Franklin Hathcock was apparently the second son of Flemon Hathcock of Bibb County, Alabama. The name of his mother is unknown but his stepmother was Martha, last name unknown. John Franklin was born on 22 August 1827 near Bibbville, Alabama. Bibbville is situated in the extreme northwest corner of Bibb County near the Tuscaloosa County boundary line. He was the younger brother of Samuel Wilburn Hathcock and the older brother of Flemon Jackson Hathcock (Jack). His sisters were Elizabeth, Louisa, and Martha. His half-sister was Emily and his half-brother was James. John Franklin apparently lived with his parents until he married Sarah Hendrix 1 in Bibb County on his twenty-fifth birthday 22 August 1849. They moved from Bibb County to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama shortly after they were married and appear in the 1850 Census of Tuscaloosa County. At that time, their first child Martha Jane was only four months old. Martha Jane was later nicknamed "Shud."
John Franklin and his family lived in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama for seven or eight years and moved to Monroe County, Mississippi about 1857. In the ten years from the time the 1850 census was taken until the time the 1860 census was taken, John Franklin and Sarah had six more chldren as can be seen on the 1860 census.
