Samuel Hathcock was probably born sometime between 1725 and 1745 in North Carolina. He left very few footprints in history, making it difficult to trace his movements or even his existence. The earliest record found to date is in the official census of South Carolina in 1800. He appears in that census along with who is believed to be his son, John Heathcock, and his brother, John Heathcock. In this census, his brother is named as John Heathcock Sr.; however, his son is named as John Heathcock with no Jr. following his name.2267
Samuel is believed to be one of the two unnamed sons mentioned in the obituary of Thomas Hathcock that appeared in several Southern newspapers in 1818 (the other being John Hathcock Sr.).
