John Hathcock, Jr.
John Hathcock, Jr. was born about 1785 in or around Kershaw County, South Carolina. His father was John Hathcock, Sr. His grandfather was probably Thomas Heathcock, who migrated from Northampton County, North Carolina to Richmond County during the American Revolution. This particular part of South Carolina was undergoing devisions of counties during these early years. Part of Craven County was organized as The Camden District and Clarmont County of Camden District was formed in 1785. Later it became Kershaw County in 1798.
The first possible record of John Hathcock, Jr. is found on the 1800 census of Kershaw County, when he was living in his father's household.

Although names of children are not indicated on the census records until 1850, there is little doubt that the relationships, indicated in parentheses, are at least in part true. An analysis of subsequent census records of John Hathcock, Sr. substantiate these Lationships, as will be seen.
John Hathcock's (Jr.) father sold 540 acres o£ 1 and in the Sumter District of South Carolina on 3 February 1802. The deeds indicate, however, that John Hathcock, Sr. was living in Kershaw County at that time. It may be assumed that John Hathcock, Sr. sold his land in South Carolina in preparation to moving to Burke County, Georgia. It was probably in 1802 or 1803 that John Hathcock, Jr. actually moved to Georgia with his parents. After a few years in Georgia he moved to Tennessee.
The 1812 tax and militia list of Bedford County, Tennessee, contains name of two John Hathcocks. Since John Hathcock, Jr. was about 27 years of age in 1812, it can be reasonably assumed that he was one of the two John Hathcock's appearing on this list.
His father was at least 57 years of age at this time and would not have been required to register for the militia. It follows that the other John Hathcock was the son of Samuel Hathcock and the first cousin of John Hathcock, Jr. John Hathcock, Jr. enlisted as a Private in the War of 1812 on 17 January 1814 under Colonel Samuel Bunch and Captain John Dobbins in the East Tennessee Militia. He was discharged a few days later on 23 January 1814 due to inability.*
*Note: There is good evidence, however, that John Hathcock Jr. received land in Tennessee in pay for his military service. He enlisted in 1812 and 1814, and was discharged in the Creek Indian Nation.
John Hathcock, Jr. lived in Bedford County, Tennessee until about 1818 or 1819 when he, his parents, and close Hathcock relatives moved to Bibb County, Alabama and settled near what is now near Woodstock, Alabama.
The first certain record of John Hathcock, Jr. appears in the 1830 Census of Bibb County. At this time he was living near his father, John Hathcock, Sr. and near his brother, Barney Hathcock, the elder.

The scarcity of information available on John Hathcock, Jr. has led to confusion as to his activities after 1830. After careful study, the only reasonable assumption is that John Hathcock, Jr. and his brother, Barney Hathcock, moved from Bibb County, Alabama back to Bedford County. John Hathcock, Jr. must have moved back in the 1830's and Barney probably moved back at the same time. However, Barney is not recorded in the 1830 Bedford County Census for some reason whereas the 1830 Census of Bedford County contains John Hathcock, Jr. with William Hathcock., living next door. William has not been identified, but perhaps was a son of the elder Barney Hathcock. It is possible that John Hathcock, Jr. left his wife in Bibb County for some reason noting that no older female is in the household of John Jr. in the Bedford County Census of 1830:

The fact that John Hathcock, Jr and John Hathcock appear in two states at the time of the 1830 census would seem to prove that they were two different men, particularly since the composition of their families are altogether different. A reasonable explanation of this could be that John Hathcock, Jr. moved to Bedford County, Tennessee from Bibb County, Alabama in the year 1830. And he and his family were actually counted in the 1830 Tennessee census but in Alabama the census taker relied upon distant·neighbors for the census information. It is known that this was a common curence and it leads to suspicion of the accuracy in many census records, particularly prior to 1850. It is believed that John Hathcock, Jr. had moved to Tennessee shortly before the Alabama census was taken and someone else gave the erroneous information to the census taker. Although no other exp1anation seems plausible, just whether the two John Hathcock's are the same man remains unproven. It is noted that the younger Barney Hathcock, son of John Hathcock, lived and married in Bibb County, Alabama before moving to Arkansas with his brother Thomas Jefferson Hathcock (later Hathcoat) about 1855.
In 1830 John Hathcock, Jr . and his family were living near Gage Creek in Bedford County. Their neighbors were: William Kerr, William Mop and William Johnson. The William Hathcock married a roman by the name of Charlotte about 1830. William's father is unknown. John Hathcock, Jr.'s sons were: William Carol Hathcock, Thomas Jefferson Hathcock, John Hathcock, Jasper and Barney Hathcock. Bedford County land records indicate that a John Hathcock sold 50 acres of land to his neighbor, William Kerr, on 25 July 1836. The price of the land was $40.00.
Tax lists of Bedford County between 1836 and 1839 show that John Hathcock, Jr., his sons and his brothers or sons of his brothers were in Bedford County, Tennessee during these years .

Recalling that John Hathcock, Jr. had sold his land 6 years before, (Book FF, Page 429), he may not have had any taxable land in 1836. Although Allen C. Hathcock was only about 17, he was probably listed as a militia registrant rather than a taxpayer. William Hathcock at age 27 was probably both a taxpayer and a militia man. Barney Hathcock who was about 46 years of age was probably a taxable landholder. In 1837 the Tax List of Bedford County includes John Hathcock, Jr., William Hathcock and Allen C. Hathcock.

The next year in 1838 the Tax List of Bedford County includes John Hathcock, Jr. and his brother Barney Hathcock living in the same district . Allen C. Hathcock has not been identified, but it is likely that he was a son of Barney. Further it is likely that the William in the Tax Lists was a son of Barney.

It would appear that both William and Allen C. were sons of Barney. (See 1840 Census of Bedford County.) Allen C. Hathcock appears on the 1840 Census of Bedford County, Allen was a common name among the Williamson County, Tennessee Hathcocks.

On page 121 of Part I, Bedford County Court Minutes 1848-1852 mention is made of William Hathcoat being appointed a juror for the 1849 December term of the circuit court. In the April term of 1852 Chancery Court minutes mention is made of Sara and James (?) Hathcock and J. Whitthorne as their guardian. This suggests that William Hathcock died in 1852.
John Hathcock, Jr.must have moved to Marion County, Tennessee in late 1839 or early 1840 for a John Heathcoat is enumerated on the Marion County Census in 1840. Since the census indicates he was born between 1780 and 1790, it must be assumed that this was John Hathcock, Jr. (born ca 1785) . Also the ages of the children seem to match .

John Hathcock, Jr.
John Hathcock, Jr. was born about 1785 in or around Kershaw County, South Carolina.
