Notes on Catherine Turner, and link to parentage.2197Catherine Turner was mentioned as Coty in the Darlington Court Case. She married Barnaba Hathcock. He is listed on the 1800 census with his family under the Free Colored Column.
Catherine Tuner Hathcock age 75 female, born North Carolina and of the Mulatto race, is listed living with son, William Hathcock and his family 1850 ed 162b. She is marked as Insane. She is to have died shortly after this November 16, 1850 dated census checklist of families in Covington County, Alabama.
30th January 1807 Barnabas Hathcock sold land he had inherited from (father in law) JOHN TURNER, deceased. (Marion Co., deed book I page 104)
BARNEY HATHCOCK2196Barney Hathcock was born about 1775 in either North or South Carolina. He first appears in the census records of Liberty Co, Marion District, SC, in 1800. Liberty Co later became Marion Co. In this census, Barney Hathcock is enumerated as Barna Hathcock with seven members in his family. This would suggest that Barney had been married for six to eight years by 1800. Since he does not appear in the census of 1790 as a head of household, he must not have been married in 1790. Barna was listed in the same manner as free blacks and indians in the 1800 census, suggesting that Barna or his family were Indian or part Indian. Barney married Catherine Turner, the daughter of John Turner, and as discussed in Section 2.4, Turner was a very common family name among the Nottaway Indians of Virginia.
The old Liberty District was adjacent to Richmond Co, NC, where Thomas W. Hathcock lived and it believed that Barney
may have been a grandson of Thomas Hathcock. Thomas lived near the county line of Richmond Co NC and Marion Co SC. Thomas was the son of Edward Hathcock, who lived in Northampton Co NC in 1749 and perhaps before. Sons of Thomas lived in SC and Barney is a common name throughout the descendants of their families (see Section 3.1.1).
In 1807, an instrument in Deed Book 1 of Marion Co indicates that Barney inherited 163 acres of land from John Turner. The land was described as being in Marion Co on the northeast side of Catfish Swamp and had been granted to John Turner in 1786. Barney later sold this land to George Rawles on 21 August 1819.
Barney appears in the 1810 and 1820 censuses of Marion Co but he must have moved to Darlington Co by 1830 since he appears in the 1830 census of that county. He and his sons William and Thomas are enumerated in the 1830 census. Both sons had married and had families of their own by 1830. The records imply that Barney, his family, and his sons and their families moved to Alabama that year and settled in Lowdnes Co. On 15 February 1836, Barney was granted federal land in Section 10, Township 13 or Range 16. In the 1840 census, Barney and William were living in Lowdnes Co but William was living in Monroe Co.
Hathcock Family History, Volume VI, discusses the descendants of Barney Hathcock in considerable detail and will not be repeated here.

The assignment of Barnabus as son of John Hathcock Sr. is speculative. One of the descendants of Barnabus Hathcock believes that Barnabus was the son of John Hathcock Sr. of Kershaw Co SC (presumed son of Thomas Hathcock).
