Name from death certificate of W. H. H. Davis, May 4, 1917. In some census records (1850, 1860) he was recorded as “S. H. Davis”. His 2nd marriage in Texas to Sarah Jane Butner in 1853 recorded him as James H. Davis. That the two names refer to the same individual is shown by the fact that the 1860 census records “S. H. Davis” as head of family with wife “Sarah J. Davis”
Following is from research of Hugh Hierholzer:
1181James H Davis was born about 1815 in Kentucky, died before 1884, and was buried in Bexar Co TX on the Davis homestead.
Note added by Clayton Heathcock, June 22, 2011: This birth year is wrong; he was born in 1797.James Davis settled in St. Hedwig, Bexar Co TX, in 1856. He lived on 840 acres of land with children Madora Ann, and twins William H. and Martha. Homested was located about one mile West of the Wilson Co line, and situated on both sides of the Lipan Branch. Estimated to be in the general area of the corner of E. Lupon and E. Gable Rd., present day St. Hedwig.
His wife died when the twins were born, as the family was traveling from Mississippi through Arkansas.
Note added by Clayton Heathcock, June 22, 2011: This is probably wrong as the 1850 Arkansas census shows that daughter Medora, six years older than the twins, was also born in Arkansas.• The birth locations of James H. Davis and wife are proposed as they are only implied from some later census records of the children.
• To date James H. Davis has not been found an any census record. His three children are found on the 1850 & 1860 federal census with S. H. Davis (born about 1797 in Kentucky). It is speculatd that S. H. Davis was a brother or uncle to James H. Davis. Further speculation is that S. H. looked after the children while James H. got affairs in order after the death of his wife. James H. Davis and Samuel H. Davis are mentioned together on deed records.
Note added by Clayton Heathcock, June 22, 2011: As written at the top of this note, this is probably incorrect as the evidence is that S. H. Davis and James H. Davis were one and the same.• On a 1/2 acre plot, a section of a 200 acre parcel on the North bank of the Lipan Branch. The exact spot is yet to be identified.
