He is the son of the late Edward Hammond and Charlotte Gill Hammond. He was born in Tamworth New Hampshire and served in the United States Air Force for 21 years as a navigator where he served three tours in Vietnam. After retiring from the Air Force he worked for the VA in the Cemetery System. He also served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and as an instructor in the Power Squadron. He instructed children in boating safety courses for the Delaware Fish and Wildlife.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years*, Mary Hammond of Milton; and three sons Robert Michael, William Patrick and Steven Richter Hammond. Also, two sisters Dorothy and Patricia; 4 grandchildren and two stepchildren, David A. Schepleng and William G. Schepleng III.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to The USO, PO Box 96860, Washington, DC 20077-7677. Services and burial will be private. Arrangements handled by Short Funeral Services Milton, DE
*Note added by Clayton Heathcock, 13 Sep 2021. This would indicate that his marriage to Mary was in 1975 and therefore a second marriage since he was married to Betty Jo Richter iin Texas in 1955. Two of the sons, Robert Michael and Steven Richter Hammond, were born in Texas in 1956 (Bexar Co) and 1960 (Harris Co). It is not clear when and where William Patrick was born.
