Notes for William Albert (Spouse 1)
William was called "Albert" by his wife & family. Apparently the name "William" was never used.
Although Atascosa Co. is listed as the birthplace of most of the children of Albert and Annie Brooks, it is possible that many of them were born in Bexar Co. and/or Frio County.
Albert & Annie Brooks left Texas some time during the winter of 1898-99, traveling 1st to Arizona where they spent the remainder of the winter with the family of Albert's brother, John Milton Brooks. They traveled by wagon, with all of their children, including their married daughter "Bertie" and her husband Isaac Pue and their infant son. This baby was later to die in Arizona.
After the layover in Arizona, the family traveled northward, pausing in the Boise, Idaho area where there were other relatives, descendants of Albert's uncle, "Micager" Brooks and his wife Susan Sansing. They then went on up to the coast of Washington for unknown reasons.
Apparently the damp climate did not agree with the family there, so some time before the birth of their last child, Preston, they came to Selah, Washington and settle into farming there. The arduour journey across the Cascade mountains by wagon took 3 months. This was the age of the railroad, after all, but large families with many children, possessions, and livestock still had to travel by wagon.
