“THIS MAN GREW UP WITH COUNTY. DEATH OF Wm. W. JONES REMOVES ONE OF OLDEST CITIZENS. HE HAD AN EVENTFUL LIFE. AFTER WAR ENGAGED IN FARMING AND LEAVES 300 ACRE FARM”

The death of Wm. W. Jones, of Harrison Township Saturday removes one of Daviess County’s oldest and best known citizens. Mr. Jones was born in Davies Co. 74 years ago. His entire life was spent in this county where he accumulated considerable property. He was the son of Joseph Jones who came to this county in 1816, the year Indiana was admitted to the union as a state.  The grandfather of Mr. Jones died in this county in 1840.

He was a native of South Carolina where he lived and owned slaves before emigrating to this state.  The father of Mr. Jones died in this county in 1866 and his mother having died in 1862. It will be seen that the family has lived in this county nearly one hundred years.

Mr. Jones was a Union soldier in the Civil War. He enlisted in 1864 in Co. “E” 49th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and served about one year, receiving an honorable discharge at the end of the War. A brother of Mr. Jones was in the same company and was killed in the battle of Cedar Mountain. At the time of his death he owned 300 acres of the best land in Harrison Township.

Mr. Jones in 1852 married Miss Eliza Collins of Knox County. To them 13 children were born, three of whom are left. Mason, and M.C. Jones and Mrs. A.H. Owens. All of whom live near the home farm. Two sons were drowned at the same time in White river July 9, 1884.  In Politics Mr. Jones was a republican. He was a member of the Aikman Creek Baptist Church. His wife died just a year ago.

Mr. Jones was well and favorably known by all the older citizens of the county and many others. He was one of the prosperous and progressive farmers of the county. His death was not unexpected owing to the nature of his illness, Brights disease.

The funeral was held at Aikman Creek Baptist Church at 11 o’clock this morning. Burial in adjoining Cemetery. There was a large crowd present.
