Taylor Mourns Compton Death
942 TAYLOR, Dec. 1.–(Spl)–W. T. (Uncle Billy) Compton died Wednesday and this entire city mourns the loss of an unusual citizen.
Compton, 78, had been ill several weeks. He died in a Taylor hospital late Wednesday afternoon.
This is the kind of person he was:
A retired rurla mail carrier, he had a habit of visiting the Taylor hospital to talk with and try to cheer the sick. And he often sat up with the sick in their homes.
He never missed a funeral in Taylor. It's believed he attended the First Baptist Church more than any other person in Taylor.
He moved to Taylor at the age of seven from his birthplace in Somerset, Ky. He worked as a rural mail carrier from 1909 until his retirement in 1936.
Two sons survive him, Peyton and Clare Compton of Houston. Also a brother, C. V. Compton of Dallas.
Final rites were held Thursday at 4 p. m. at the Condra Funeral Home. The Rev. W. A. Irvin will officiate. Pallbearers will be Sam Burnap, O. J. Wolters, L. D. Bammack, W. L. Gillaspy, E. L. Lauck and James Byrom.
