Nathan Jones was a Revolutionary War soldier, serving with Colonel Greenberry Lee of Georgia.
450 He removed from the Wrightsborough community in 1782 and settled in Elbert County.
“On January 23, 1777,
Nathan Jones of Chatham Co NC sold to Robert Pyland of Edgecomb Co NC for 40 pounds a tract of 74 acres on the north side of Swift Creek, it being part of a tract of land granted to Thomas Bell. Witnesses were W. S. Means, Hardy Griffin, and Francis Parker. Courtney Jones, wife of said
Nathan Jones, was examined separately concering her right of dower in the above tract of land on January 24, 1777; Francis Parker was the witness.
Nathan Jones had married Courtney Bell in Edgecombe Co on January 1, 1763.”
451 [*See note below] Courtney Bell was a daughter of Thomas Bell, as shown by his will.
Robert Pyland was the husband of Caroline Bell, Courtney Bell’s aunt. The land in question was part of the plantation of Thomas Bell, which was left to his son Brittain Bell when Thomas died in 1763. It seems to have been divided between Brittain and his sisters Courtney, Caroline and Priscilla. In June of 1777, Robert Pyland purchased the other 74 acres from Priscilla Bell and thus reunited all of the portions of Thomas Jones’ plantation.
