"Enoch Jones was stocky and jolly, had bright blue eyes, and pink cheeks. He enlisted 25 Jul 1861 at Knobb Prarie, IL and was mustered into service as a musician (drummer), Company F, 40 Reg. Illinois Volunteer Infantry, on 10 Aug 1861 at Camp Butler, IL. Residence when enlisted, Akin, IL. Age 27; height 5'4"; hair light; eyes blue; complexion light; married; farmer and cabinet maker; native Owensville, IN. Promoted to 1st Lt. Company F 40 Reg. Illinois Volunteer Infantry 28 Mar 1863. Promoted to Captain on 22 Nov 1864. Mustered out and honorably discharged 15 May 1865. Service no longer needed. Signed by C. E. Black, Adjutant General, Chief of Staff, Illinois. Enoch Jones was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta. A bullet hit a button on his uniform and both penetrated his chest. They stayed in some time until a doctor fished them out with a chrochet hook (no anethestic)."
