Adelia's mother--sometimes called Rachel and sometimes called Josephine--was born to Joseph and Anna Jones Hobbs on January 14, 1830, in Indiana. Rachel came with her family to Walker County, Texas, as a child around 1840, and married Gabriel Helms around 1845 in Walker County.210

Aged Lady Passes On To Her Reward

Mrs. R. J. Helms of Leesville, one of the oldest and most highly respected residents of the county, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. W. Johnson at Leesville, Thursday, Feb. 4, at 12:30 p.m. following an illness of about a month. She was about 86 years of age.

She leaves one son and seven daughters. She was the mother of Mrs. M. T. Haynes of this city. Her husband died about thirty years ago .

Surviving her are also a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was a resident of Gonzales county for many years, living in the Leesville section and she was greatly revered by all who knew her.

The funeral was held this afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground in Union Cemetery near her old home.

About 20 years ago, I met Dora Hastings, daughter of Otha King and Adelia Hobbs. Adelia Hobbs was daughter of Pleasant Howe Hobbs, my great grandfather. Dora was his granddaughter by his first wife, Catherine Cotter, and I am his great grandson by his second wife, Florence King.

One of the things Dora sent me was a copy of writings in the Josephine Helms bible. This was Rachel Josephine Hobbs, b 14 Jan 1830, d 4 Feb 1915. She was one of the 13 children of Joseph Hobbs and Anna Jones, daughter of Ebenzer Jones. The copy I have is apparently in Dora Hastings' hand, but is of the "white on black" type and is difficult to read in places. It is three pages in total and includes the following:
