Notes for John Hathcock
Northampton County deed records show that in 1758 Edward Hathcock transferred land to John Heathcock:

“Edward Heathcock to John Heathcock. both of Northampton County. for 2 pounds 10 shillings. 20 acres on Turbafield Run adjacent to Drury Jordan dated 17 May 1758. Witnesses: John Scoulis and Drury Jordon. July Court 1758.”1560

This deed was registered two days after Edward Hathcock gave 100 acres “to his son Thomas Hathcock”. Because the amount that Edward transferred to John was only 20 acres and because he charged for it, it is possible that John was not Edward’s son, but another relative. However, three years later, John Heathcock sold this same land to Drury Jordan for 51 pounds. This suggests that he was given the land by Edward Heathcock for only about 5% of its true value.

John sold this land on 2 June 1761 for 5 pounds [DB 2:475; 3:132]. He paid 330 pounds for 160 acres on Jack Swamp in Northampton County on 18 November 1778, and he and wife Martha sold this land for 375 pounds on 4 January 1779 [DB 6:344, 339]. He was taxed in Northampton County in 1780 on 172 pounds cash and a total assessment of 1,737 pounds [GA 46.1]. He was head of a Northampton County household of 3 free males and 8 free females in Captain William's District for the 1786 state census, 4 "other free" in 1790 [NC:74] and 9 "other free" in 1800 [NC:449].538
